Is Your Password Strength Really Keeping Out Hackers?

by Josh Wilmoth on April 11, 2010

Many of us don’t like to be bothered with creating passwords for everything we do on our computers and online.  However, your password strength can make the difference between keeping your data safe and secure, or becoming a hacker’s next juicy target.  In this article, I’ll show you how to quickly and easily make sure your passwords are up to the challenge of keeping out those who have no business being in your business.

It is common knowledge that you should use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters to create strong passwords.  Yet, the most commonly used password on the Internet is 123456.  In fact, according to a recent report 6 out of the top 20 passwords are a combination of 123456 – 12345, 123456789, 1234567, 12345678 and 654321.

If your password is listed above, consider yourself warned and change it now!

We have reviewed other online password checking tools.  We found that most of these tools just check your password and don’t tell you why your password is weak or how you can fix it.

Well now there is such a tool.  Password Meter is a online tool that will not only rate your password’s strength but will assist you on what kind of characters you should add or remove to improve your password’s strength.  By entering your password and reviewing the recommendations instantly you can protect yourself from unauthorized people accessing your sensitive files and data.

Today’s homework is simple.  Go to Password Meter and enter in your most complex password in your vault.  How did you score?

Need more help?  Call us.  We are more than happy to assist.  It is our job to make sure you are protected and stay protected from all of the threats that are out there.  Go do it… now.
