We have had numerous calls and emails this morning regarding concerns of a security vulnerability report affecting Microsoft Video ActiveX Control on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft is currently working to develop a security update for Windows to address this vulnerability. According to Microsoft, they “will release the security update once it has reached an appropriate level of quality for broad distribution”.
Microsoft says that users running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable to the drive-by type attacks, while Windows Vista and Server 2008 and those running IE8 are not at risk.
Because the security patch is not yet available, Microsoft has released a workaround to disable the Microsoft Video ActiveX Control. The workaround is available here to download. Once the download is complete, double click the file to install it. To download and install the update takes just a few minutes.
We are monitoring the situation very closely and will notify you of any other recommendations moving forward.
